Bleeding while brushing is never normal. It signals inflamed tissue fighting a constant bacterial attack. Red swollen gums, persistent bad breath, or a sour taste in the mouth are other early warnings. As disease progresses, you may notice receding gums that make teeth look longer, spaces forming between teeth, or sensitivity to cold drinks because roots become exposed.
If floss seems to shred in the same spot, a hidden tartar ledge may be present. Mobility, or a slight wiggle in a tooth, means bone loss has already begun. None of these signs will go away on their own. Over the counter rinses only mask odor and do not remove the source of infection. The sooner you schedule an evaluation, the simpler treatment will be and the better your long term outlook.
At Wall Street Dental Group we use a small measuring probe to map pocket depth around each tooth. Healthy pockets measure three millimetres or less and do not bleed. Depths beyond that show the tissue is pulling away. Digital X rays reveal bone levels and help us grade the stage of disease. Together, these tools create a clear picture that guides the next steps.
